Mabel was born in Person County, North Carolina on October 16, 1942, to the late Herbert Cunningham and Beatrice Royster.
She married Freddie L. McCain in 1959 and had two children. She was a member and was baptized at Bible Way Church in Washington, D.C. on September 28, 1969.
Mabel retired from the National Institute of Health with 30 years of Federal Service. After retiring, she worked at the Prince George’s County School.
When she moved to Washington, D.C she was a young and single parent and worked two and three jobs day and night to make sure her kids had food on the table and a roof over their head. She was a kind person to everyone she came in contact with, whether family or friend. She was also an incredible cook, and everybody loved to eat her food. She would prepare food from her own kitchen to take down to the homeless shelter to help feed the needy, making sure everyone got their share of food. She loved driving to the park in the morning to walk and feed the birds.
Mabel was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her children and her grandchildren whom she loved very much. She always put others before herself and was always there for everyone no matter what. She was a patient, understanding, and strong-willed woman. Despite all the hardships she may have endured, she always remained positive. She may be gone from the earth, but her heavenly spirit will always remain and watch over us.
Mabel was preceded in death by her late husband, Freddie L. Mccain, her brother David Cunningham and her sister Rosa Lee Cunningham.
She is survived by her daughter, Lois McCain and her son Freddie Mccain (Valeria), grandchildren, Erica Mccain, Alexis McCain, Raven McCain and Rashida McCain; sisters, Isabel Bailey (John), Iola Cunningham, Leona Pearson, Caroline Cunningham, Queen Rose (Leroy), Dorothy Graves and one brother Herbert Roosevelt Cunningham and a host of relatives and friends.
