Margaret Jean Lewis Davis was born on February 15, 1933, in Durham, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Deacon William McKinley Lewis, Sr., and Annie Mae Lewis. Margaret was introduced to the LORD at an early age and was a longstanding member of White Rock Baptist Church. She departed this life on June 16, 2016, surrounded by loved ones.
She was educated in the Durham, North Carolina, school system where she graduated from Hillside High School (HHS) and later attended North Carolina Central University.
She met the love of her life and soul mate, Harry Lee Davis, while he was visiting his relatives in her neighborhood. Margaret and Harry shared a love of sports. Margaret and her sister Katie also were members of HHS’s basketball team.
Margaret and Harry entered holy matrimony in 1953, and from this union three daughters were born—Linda Carol, Gail Elaine, and Jean Denise. The family moved from North Carolina and headed to Washington, D.C., to seek better job opportunities.
In 1959, Margaret began her 30 years of service with the federal government, finally retiring from the United States Postal Service in 1989.
Margaret spent many years as a caregiver to her disabled brother, elderly mother, and sickly husband. Her kindness and compassion were unmatched—helping family, friends, and the less fortunate.
She was a diehard Redskins fan. In her earlier years, she followed the Redskins to away games with a local social club. She had a talent that she shared with her two brothers (Bill and John)—she knew as much about her beloved Redskins, Wizards, and Nationals as a seasoned sports analyst.
Margaret was a God-loving and God-fearing woman which made her truly beautiful from the inside out. She also was a family-loving woman and especially loved getting together for family dinners. She believed that her family was the greatest wealth she could have ever possessed.
Margaret’s beautiful smile and witty sense of humor will be missed.
Preceding her in the afterlife: her husband, Harry Lee Davis: her brothers, William McKinley Lewis, Jr., and John Gilbert Lewis.
Margaret leaves to cherish her loving memories: three daughters, Linda Davis Perry (Donald), Gail Davis (Tola), and Jean Davis-Smith; two sisters, Katie Coleman and Annie Sowell (Frank); Grandchildren, Anthony (Tony) Carrington, Adrienne Perry, Cameron Smith, Crystal Smith, and Lauren Perry; one great grandson, Shaun Rivers Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
