Mary Mynetta Baird-Currie went home to be with the Lord and her mother, father, brother (Gilbert), and sisters (Evelyn and Maggie) on Monday, November 30, 2020 at the age of 88 as a result of complications from Dementia and a recent stroke. The middle daughter of Booker and Ecolia Baird, Mary (commonly referred to as Net) was born October 1, 1932 in Weaverville, NC. Raised in Washington, DC, Mary completed Dunbar High School in 1951. A proud 1957 graduate of Shaw University, she also completed course work to receive her Master of Education degree with a concentration in Guidance/Counseling in 1972 from Bowie State College.
As a young woman, she supported the family restaurant business. However, she spent her entire working career in the District of Columbia Public School system, first as a teacher and then a school guidance counselor. During her tenure, she touched the lives of many students and families until her retirement in June 1996. In planning for retirement, Mary became active in local DC politics. She was elected to several terms as the Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for 5A representing the Michigan Park, North Michigan Park, Woodridge, Fort Lincoln, and Brookland neighborhoods. As a community advocate, she led and was involved in numerous community projects and programs including but not limited to dealing with traffic, parking, recreation, economic development, police protection, and sanitation. Those who knew and worked with her knew that she was strong-willed and demanding.
Mary was a loving, doting and supportive mother to her only child, Ulysses Michael Currie (Janet). In addition to Michael, she leaves to cherish her memory her grandson Christopher Michael Currie and her granddaughter Taylor Hayes Currie (commonly referred to by Mary as Little Woman); her nephews, Rommel White and Ronald Green; her nieces, Gwendolyn Baird-Wiggs, Anita Fitzgerald, Vivian Green and Rhoda Green; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
