Mary Elizabeth Taylor, affectionately known as “Sis,” entered eternal life on Thursday, November 20, 2025. She was born on March 10, 1950, in Robersonville, North Carolina, the youngest of ten children to the late Mary Harrington Moore Taylor and Ardell Taylor.
Mary graduated from high school in 1968 through the North Carolina school system. As the youngest in a large family, she was given the freedom to explore her gifts of curiosity and adventure, which eventually led her to leave North Carolina and begin a new chapter in Washington, D.C. There, she pursued vocational training and embraced each role as an opportunity for growth. Her career journey ultimately led her to contract administration, where she thrived through her kindness, no-nonsense approach, and spirited personality.
Among Mary’s many accomplishments, her greatest joy was becoming a mother to her only child, Dr. Ellen “Netta” Taylor. She often shared that witnessing her daughter earn the highest academic degree in her field was one of her proudest moments—a dream she always believed would come true. Mary’s love and support for her daughter were unwavering and evident to everyone she met.
Another defining moment in Mary’s life was her conversion to the Catholic faith. Her devotion to God was reflected in her generosity and compassion. If someone was in need, Mary would give her last—often with a little scolding—but never turned anyone away. Her door was always open to family, friends, and anyone seeking help. Those who knew Mary also knew her favorite pastimes: sleeping, dining out, and savoring a good home-cooked meal.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory and carry forward her legacy: her beloved daughter, Dr. Ellen Taylor, and her grand-dog, Kai Taylor. She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters—Delia Mae Taylor, Annie Mildred Coffield, Shirley Mayberry, Vera Ross, and Odell Taylor; and four brothers—Charlie Manning Taylor, Clinton Taylor, James Taylor, and Johnnie Ray Mobley. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, and dear friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.
