Mary’s early childhood years were in North Carolina where she attended Nash County Public Schools. In 1954, at the young age of 14, Mary relocated to Washington, DC to live with her aunt Mary Thomas. It was the beginning of a well-lived life centered around family and career.
Shortly after arriving in Washington DC, Mary met the love of her life Jesse B. Webb. They were married for 45 years and from that union they were blessed with three daughters, Sharlean Webb, Angela Webb Williams, and Helen Webb Black; and three sons, Jesse Webb Jr, Fletcher Ronnie Webb, and Charlie Webb. Mary found much joy in her children.
Motivated by her love for good food and providing good service, Mary began her long illustrious profession as a banquet waitress. Throughout the years of her career, she continued to progress, first beginning at the Belmont Hotel, then on to the Esteemed Cosmos Club before becoming a member of the Hotel Banquet Union. In the early 1990’s Mary became the Banquet manager at the renowned Howard University. She loved being able to provide meals to all, including the university president, faculty, and students. In addition, Mary was proud that she was able to share her career and work ethic with her children and family members by employing them during major events. After retiring from Howard University because of health reasons, Mary enjoyed fishing, traveling, and winning at the casinos. She loved to spend time with her siblings, children, grandchildren, and other relatives.
On Friday, February 17, 2023, while a patient at the George Washington University Hospital Center, Mary was peacefully called home to be with the Lord.
Mary Lee Richardson Webb leaves to cherish fond memories, her five loving children; Jesse, Fletcher (Simone), Angela (Danny), Charlie (Margret), Helen (Walter); four grandchildren, Janea, Ronnie, Timothy, Tayla; three great- grandchildren; Isaac, Jania, Joshua; four sisters, Ella Mae Battle, Annie Ruth Battle, Lucy Richardson and Zollie Davis (Robert); two brothers, Matthew Richardson (Laura) Bobby Richardson (Audrey), and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Mae and Delsie Richardson, husband Jesse B. Webb, daughter Sharlean Webb, brother Levon Richardson, and sisters Dorothy Brinkley, and Peggie Richardson.
Mary’s untimely and unexpected passing has left a void in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be greatly missed. May she rest in God’s peace and love.
“ A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:3)
