Early Thursday morning, April 29, 2021, Mildred Lorraine Patterson Lucas passed peacefully, at home, with family by her side. Daughter of the late Julian and Lolita Patterson, Mildred was born in Southwest Washington, DC, on May 19, 1929.
Mildred was baptized at the Zion Baptist Church in Southwest DC on January 24, 1943. She was educated in the DC Public Schools and graduated from Armstrong Senior High School. Mildred attended Howard University and majored in Home Economics. On November 26, 1949, she was united in Holy Matrimony to James Ira Lucas, Sr. From this union two children were born, James Jr. and Deborah. Mildred and James shared fifty-four joyous and devoted years. James preceded Mildred in death on February 14, 2004. As the youngest of the three Patterson children, both Julian and Delores predeceased her.
Mildred worked for the Federal Government for over forty years. She retired as a Foreign Service Officer with Voice of America, Chinese Branch on January 12, 1980.
Affectionately known as Millie, Millie P and Mom, Mildred had a special gift for hosting parties at Rock Creek Park, Eagle Harbor Beach, and her home on Brentwood Road. She delighted in traveling the world wide, to destinations such as China, Australia, Hawaii, France, Canada, the Caribbean, and all four corners of the United States. Mildred especially enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends. She cherished her daily trips to the park with her dogs: Onyx, Charlie, Precious, Cody, and Diva. She also enjoyed watching the beauty of the changing clouds.
To cherish her memory, Mildred leaves one son, James Jr. (Patricia), one daughter, Deborah (Foster Armwood); three grandchildren: Jaron (Shana), Daryl (Dr. Tiffini), Danielle; four great-grandchildren: Daryl, II, Kristin, Rayelle, Ramiro; nephews and nieces: David and Mia Patterson; Mustafa, Michael, Anthony, Paul, and Carlyn Lucas; a host of cousins: Brenda Lipkowtiz, Gregory and Stefan Mayberry, and Joseph Lucas; special friends include: Christine A. Smith, Winston Grant (her Boo), Colleen and Paul Edwards, Treva Poole Lawrence & the Poole Family, Sheila Holder, Rufus & Bernetha Jones, Marlene & Rev. Robert Tolson, Karlyetta Wynn, the late Dr. Ronnie Washington, and many others.
