Minnie Pearl Smith Buncombe was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on November 17, 1928 to the late Willie Smith and Marine Hines. She departed this life on February 11, 2021 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Pearl or Mother as she was affectionately known was one of three children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas McKernell Buncombe, Sr, and infant son Alan Peter.
At a young age Pearl came to Washington, DC to live with her Aunt Hattie. Here she received a great education, and worked for the federal government before retiring in the 1970s. While pursuing her career she had four children: Sharon Allen, Tommy Buncombe, Jr., Patricia Burton, and Alan Peter (deceased).
Pearl was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She gave her life to Christ at a very early age. She joined Israel Metropolitan CME on November 7, 1943 under pastorate of Rev. L.S. Brannon. She was active in Stewardess Board #4, Young Ladies Auxiliary (later the Ladies Auxiliary), Golden Rule Sunday School class, and the Young at Heart Ministry.
Before departing from this Earth to go on to glory she left us with a bible verse. Joshua 1:9 - “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
She is survived by two daughters and one son, three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one Godchild, Crystal Dozier, and a host of relatives and friends.
