Myrtle Bulluck Wilburn was born to the late Annie P. and George B. Bulluck Sr. in Rocky Mount, NC on August 11, 1945. She closed her eyes in rest on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at the Hebrew Home of Maryland, Rockville, MD. Her early education began in Rocky Mount until her parents relocated to Washington, DC in the late 1950’s where she attended DC Public Schools.
Myrt graduated from Cardozo High School in 1963 and briefly moved to Detroit, MI to live with her sister Yvonne and family. Upon her return to DC she went to work for the Department of Agriculture while also attending the then Washington Technical Institute (now UDC), graduating with the Associate of Applied Science (accounting) in 1974.
In the 70’s Myrt transferred to the DC Government, Department of Health and Human Services where she worked for 27 years until her retirement.
The mother to one daughter, Cheryl, Myrt pushed excellence in school and involvement in cultural and community activities. Because Cheryl had the grades, Myrt took advantage of the DC program that helped worthy Black students enroll in exclusive private schools and Cheryl left Holy Redeemer to attend Stone Ridge Catholic School in Bethesda, MD, from which she graduated. Cheryl’s initial desire was to become a veterinarian and nothing gave Myrt greater mother right of passage than setting up her dorm room at Tuskegee University. Her grandson Steve became a joy to her and she applied that same principle of involvement and excellence with him, enrolling him the in DC Youth Orchestra in violin. She enjoyed her visits to see them when they moved to Raleigh, NC.
Myrt was a member of the Florida Avenue Baptist Church during her youth and joined Mt. Horeb Baptist Church when she married Leo. She was a member of the choir, usher board, church clerk department and credit union staff at Mt. Horeb.
A stickler for details, Myrt always ended up keeping books for some organizations: the church credit union, the Eastern Star, her bowling league, the ANC where Leo was really the active member and Myrt worked in the background keeping accurate minutes and financial records.
Myrt did life her way. Every single doctor tagged her as non-compliant and everything she did was at her pace and on her terms. The family was half scared of her. She could not be hurried and you could not change her mind. However, behind the bark was no real bite as she was really generous of heart and would do whatever she could for those she loved. Myrt was tough. In spite of the fact that she had a stroke while on the table for an aneurysm repair, she was driving with no impairment in three weeks!
She kept records and receipts for every dime she spent and it was hilarious to find the paid bills for Bell Telephone, Woodward & Lothrop and other businesses no longer in existence and every check register from the 70’s forward when her home was prepared for sale!
Myrt liked to read, work puzzles, bowl and most of all, to hit the casino! Disciplined as she was, she had an amount set aside for those slots and when that was gone she immediately went home.
Life dealt Myrt some tough punches in her latter years which affected her deeply. In 2022 she moved to The Chevy Chase House where she lived until September when she required a deeper level of care and relocated to The Hebrew Home of Maryland.
Myrt was pre-deceased by her daughter Cheryl Darlene and husband Leopold Wilburn and siblings, June, Yvonne, Ront, and Pepe. She leaves behind one grandson, Steven, one sister Gloria “Jean” (Ronald), three nephews and seven nieces and a few precious cousins and great nieces and nephews. She is also predeceased by her nephew Ivan with whom she had a special bond.
