Robert Taylor Murphy Sr. was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on March 17, 1938 to the late Margaret Monroe Murphy and Booker T. Murphy. He was the second child of 2 children. At a late age he joined Sharp Street United Methodist Church. Robert enjoyed working with the Food Pantry at church each month.
Robert was educated in the DC Public School System and graduated from Dunbar High School. He later served in the U.S. Army Reserves. After his stint in the U.S. Army Reserves, he worked as a supervisor for C&P Telephone Company for over 30 years. After retirement he worked for Capital Commitment for a few years.
Robert loved his family dearly. He was a family man and actively involved in his children's lives. Robert attended both of his son's football practices and games. He frequently took his children to get ice cream at Gifford's ice cream place, and pizza at Shakey's Pizza place but drew the line at taking all of them to the grocery store with him. He dyed easter eggs with them, made candy apples for halloween, and made jello for them. He celebrated all of the holidays with his family and always got a big tree at Christmas time. Robert loved taking embarrassing pictures of his children. He was always taking pictures of his children when they were younger. Robert loved his five children. To this day, he still has their report cards from elementary school and their graduation programs. Back in the day, he listened to baseball games on the radio. He loved watching sports on television. Robert was not a fair weather fan. He was a die hard Redskins fan. He and Joyce had fun going to the Basketball games at the Capital Centre seeing the Bullets play in person.
He touched the lives of many people. His family and friends were dear to his heart.
On August 4, 2026, Robert departed this life and entered into rest. Robert leaves to cherish his memory of his wife Joyce Murphy; 1 son: Reginald Terrence Murphy; 2 daughters: Sharon T. Murphy, Yolanda Murphy; 3 grandsons: Robert Antonio Murphy, Darryl Robinson, Brian Murphy; 1 granddaughter: Vanessa Murphy and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, 3401 BLADENSBURG RD, BRENTWOOD, MD 20722, US, on August 14, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life will take place at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, 3401 BLADENSBURG RD, BRENTWOOD, MD 20722, US, on August 15, 2026, at 10:30 am.
Committal will follow at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 BLADENSBURG RD, BRENTWOOD, MD 20722, US, on August 15, 2026, at 12:30 pm.
