Sadie Elizabeth Burney peacefully transitioned at home on Thursday, November 14, 2024, surrounded by family and friends.
Sadie was born to the late Timothy and Sarah Allen in Sparta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Morris and George Allen. At an early age, Sadie's family moved to Washington, DC, where she completed her education and graduated from Dunbar High School.
Sadie wanted to follow in our grandmother's early career as a teacher and continued her education at DC Teachers College.
While Sadie will always be passionate about teaching, she had a long and successful 40+ year career working in the MICU department at Georgetown University (now Medstar-Georgetown) hospital. Sadie loved her work, and there was no task that she would not take on to ensure the comfort and care of all the patients who came through that unit. Her journey at Georgetown was a testament to her work ethic and loyalty, and her former colleagues deeply respected her.
At a young age, Sadie put her faith in Jesus as her Lord and Savior, and everyone around her knew that was the most important decision she'd ever made. She lived the rest of her life serving Him and was a Metropolitan Wesley AME Zion Church member.
Sadie was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-great-grandmother with a beautiful soul who would help anyone. Her radiant smile lit up any room she entered.
She enjoyed music and dancing; her favorite dance was the Electric Slide. And though she faced many health challenges this year, Sadie still lived life to the fullest.
Sadie leaves to cherish her memories her: loving children Judy (David), Darien, Eugene (Deborah), Michael, and Bruce; her grandchildren Kesha and Eugene III (Lakeisha); great-grandchildren Capri, Paul, Danyelle, Justice, Ian and Emanuel, great-great-grandchildren Saniya, Deandre, Kamron, Jade and Jru; Her niece, Ruby Love (James); Cousin in-law, Betty Evans-Monroe; her best friend for over 50+ years, Dorothy Smalls; Jeannette Cobbs-Smith (like a daughter) and her loving hospice nurse Matrice Truzerls and a host of family and friends.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but we know that our separation is only for a little while.
A private family interment will occur later.
