Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia to Lucile Baskerville, she moved to DC in the early 1950’s. She retired from the Washington Hospital Center housekeeping department after 40 years of exemplary service in which she received many accolades and awards.
A permanent mainstay on Third Street, NE and later Franklin Street, NE, she lived a simple life. She was considered a highly regarded matriarch in the neighborhood for her welcoming and nurturing spirit. She enjoyed a good time with friends and family. She loved oldies music, and cherished family gatherings and celebrations, and would often sacrifice her last for anyone in need. Shirley found and accepted Christian salvation later in life.
Shirley is survived by four loving children from the DC area, Joyce M. Ogburn, Shirley Ann Ogburn, Carolyn E. Parker, and John Wesley Ogburn, Jr.; five grandchildren, Kelly E. Putman, Jr., Julian B. Ogburn, Devan B. Ogburn, Jordan S. Ogburn and Garrett Hawkins; and four great grandchildren, Brandon, Kristopher, Zion, and Juelle. A Godson Lionell C. Thomas, and son-in-law Victor Parker, and daughter-in-law Sonya Ogburn. Shirley also is survived by a brother William Lee Jones and a sister Josephine Jones, and a host of close relative and friends.
Shirley will be sorely missed as she transitions to the angels in heaven.
