Tanya graduated from Notre Dame High School in Greensboro, NC in 1968 and obtained both her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Bowie State College in 1973, and years later in 2002 while working full time, she obtained her Masters of Social Work from The University of Maryland School of Social Work.
She was a devoted and passionate social worker and worked for several social work agencies and group homes throughout Maryland with her longest tenure of 24 years at Prince George’s County Department of Social Services. She loved to read, collect first edition and signed books, created a gift basket business called Kha’Saron, enjoyed the performing arts and festivals, travel and all things Afrocentric! In March 1996, she was able to finally visit the “Motherland” and traveled to Senegal, Africa. She also enjoyed traveling to numerous Caribbean islands and most recently traveled to Brazil.
In 1970, Tanya met the love of her life Ronnie and they wed on December 23, 1973. From their union they have 2 children, a son, Khari S. Hawkins and daughter Saron L. Hawkins.
Tanya Joseph Hawkins departed this life on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 after valiantly battling heart disease. She was initially only given 2-3 months survival time during a crossroads of her disease, but she defied all medical odds and stayed with us for another 18 months. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in many ways throughout her wonderful, memorable 68 years of life.
Tanya leaves to cherish her memory: her husband S. Ronald Hawkins, her son Khari S. Hawkins, his wife Tiffany Hawkins, grandson Joron, her daughter Saron L. Hawkins, her sister Carole Foster, her nephew Marc Foster, her niece Joy Liggon, grand niece Naima and grand nephew King.
