OBITUARY
TIAWANNA ELIZABETH ALSTON
Death for a Christian is not a permanent loss or fearful thing, but rather we join with Paul in saying, “to die is gain” – deliverance, a new beginning, and a new life without sickness, pain or tears. While we are unable to grasp with any degree of fullness the details, there are thrilling hints in the New Testament of what awaits our loved one, Tiawanna Elizabeth Alston, the believer.
Tiawanna Elizabeth Alston was born to John and Thelma Alston on August 4, 1958. She was the youngest of five children. On Monday November 14, 2016, Tiawanna or Tina as she was more affectionately called by her family and friends, stepped out of her old house and into a brand new mansion high up in the heavens. Scripture teaches us that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Tina received Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior while attending Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Takoma Park, Maryland. There she enrolled in an extensive bible study course which she completed successfully. She was a member of the Floral Committee and served on the Pastor’s Aid Committee. Tina had the heart of a soldier in God’s army of servitude. Her persistence and “can do attitude” made her a force to be reckoned with. All those who were close to her can attest to her willingness to step up to the plate with open and loving arms and volunteer to do whatever it took to lighten the burden of a family member’s or friend’s heavy load. She was also quite the storyteller with a flair for comedic drama. This was a trait that her nieces and nephews loved about her as well as her “give it to you straight” and her “you can tell me anything” approach with the young people in her life.
Tiawanna was educated in the District of Columbia Public School System. She completed her studies by obtaining her GED from Franklin Adult Education Center. To further enhance her academic curriculum, she attended classes at American University.
Tiawanna was employed by the D.C. Government where she was assigned as a Housekeeping Aid for the Department of Behavioral Health at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for eleven years until her retirement.
Tiawanna leaves to mourn her passing two sisters Deon Alston Walker and Dale Douglas; one brother-in-law Christopher Douglas; one maternal aunt Gladys Clipper; four nephews Robert Wiley Jr. , Richard Wiley Sr. (Cassandra); Michael Walker, Jr. (Angela) and Derrick Walker; Christopher Douglas and Stephen Douglas; one great nephew Richard Wiley, Jr.; four great nieces Ashle, Megan, Makaela and Anaia Walker. She also leaves to mourn a very dear and devoted friend Cheryl Stewart and a host of cousins and friends. She will be sorely missed by many.
