

Lewis L. Covalt, 95 a longtime Morrill County rancher passed away, Monday, August 9, 2004 at Heritage of Bridgeport.
His funeral service will be held Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Broadwater with Ann Bairns, PMA and Pastor Jack Reinmuth officiating. Interment will be at Rosehill Cemetery in Broadwater. Visitation will be Friday 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Bridgeport Memorial Chapel.
Lewis was born at home near Cleman, NE. March 5, 1909 to parents Nellie (Landon) and Victor E. Covalt, Sr. He attended grade school near home until his brother Floyd started high school and then attended school in Alliance when his mother moved the family to town during the school months. He graduated from Alliance High School in 1927. Lewis married Catherine Waggoner of Broadwater on August 29, 1931 in Alliance, NE. They lived all but eight months of their sixty-eight year marriage in the same house on their ranch seventeen miles north of Broadwater. Lewis’s beloved wife Catherine passed away May 12, 1999.
Lewis belonged to the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and served on the building committee. Lewis loved his family, his work, early in his life he played the fiddle for many dances in the community. He enjoyed training horses and liked to ride a good cutting horse. He raised greyhounds and enjoyed hunting coyotes with them. He was always an avid reader of the newspapers and agriculture based publications and stayed well informed.
Survivors are two sons John Covalt of Angora and Lanny Covalt of La Mont, OK; one daughter Elaine Reece of South Dakota grandchildren Corinne Covalt Spilker (Bill), Sharon Covalt Harshman (Dan) Roger Covalt, Ryan Covalt, Cherie Covalt Fritzler (Steve), Lonnie Covalt, James Covalt, Charles S. Reece IV, and Catherine Reece Karr (Scott). Also surviving are 23 great grandchildren; one sister Stella Webber of Kalama, WA and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Lewis was preceded in death by sisters Clara McMann and Mary Glarum; brothers Floyd and Victor.
