Robert “Bob” Arthur Haughney passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2013 at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife of the past 59 years Mary (nee Quinn). He was the loving father of Mary O’Connell (Laurence), Elizabeth, Robert (Deborah), Regina Silitch (Nicholas) and Thomas (Janine). One of his many great loves in life was his devotion to his 13 grandchildren- Laurence and Krista O’Connell; Jessica Haughney Engel; Sarah, Emily, Thomas and Annie Haughney; Kyra, Owen and Aidan Silitch ; & Kathryn, Jack and Matthew Haughney.
Bob was born on 9/2/19 in Brooklyn, NY to Edward and Agnes Haughney. After graduating Brooklyn Tech HS he enlisted in the US Navy where he served for 5 years during World War II. He served on a U.S. Destroyer in the Atlantic Theater which was struck by a U-boat Torpedo and heavily damaged prior to him transferring to the Submarine Service where he spent the remainder of the war in the Pacific Theater seeing considerable action.
After leaving the service Bob joined the New York City Fire Department in January of 1947 and spent 25 years while rising to the rank of Captain. His second career was spent as a stationary engineer at Albert Einstein College until his retirement at the age of 72. At this point he began his final career as a roving baby-sitter for his grandchildren always looking for the opportunity to help out and spend time with them.
Bob loved to travel and was fortunate to be able to tour many countries of the world along with his wife, family and friends. A great advocate of education he was constantly either teaching or learning. Retired text books from his children’s colleges always found a second home with Bob who created time for and took interest in them all.
