Abraham was born in the Jewish Quarter of Baghdad, Iraq in 1929, to the ancient Jewish community which had lived in that country for millennia.
When Abraham was a boy his father Salman died, and from his teenage years to young adulthood he cared for and supported his seven siblings. They survived the 1941 pro-Nazi pogrom in Baghdad, but lost close relatives. To escape the rising persecution of the Jews in Iraq, Abraham shepherded his family to safety in the newly created Israel in 1949. He then served in the Israel Defense Forces.
He married Odette Shamsi, of Tehran, Iran, in 1958, and lived in Ramat Gan, Israel for three decades, raising his four children, and surrounded by his extended family.
In 1985 he followed his wife’s Shamsi family to Boston, where they were joined shortly afterwards by his children. He lived in the Oak Hill Park section of Newton for over three decades.
Throughout his life Abraham was most happy when surrounded by family, especially his children and grandchildren, many of whom lived close by. He traveled frequently to Florida, California, Canada and on cruises with them. He was blessed to see most of his grandchildren grow to adulthood, as well as the births of his great-grandchildren.
Several weeks ago he gave the blessing at his granddaughter Jennifer’s wedding, and held his newly born great-grandson Benjamin at his Bris last Spring.
Abraham was the son of Salman and Masuda, and the brother of the late Joseph, Mary, Daisy, Albert, Jacob, and Isaac.
He is survived by his wife Odette Shamsi Salomon of 65 years; his sister Doris Katsir of Ramat Gan, Israel; his four children- Ora Mountain and her husband Tom of Newton, Anat Salomon Gabbay of Glen Cove, NY, Shlomo Salomon and his wife Gulmira of Brookline, Sasy Salomon and his wife Rachel of Jericho, NY; ten grandchildren- Andrew Mountain and his wife Elisa Suissa of Newton, Daniel Mountain of Boston, Jennifer Mountain and her husband David Levine of Brookline, Dorell Pinkus and her husband Matt of Woodbury, NY, Elianne Gabbay of Jericho, NY, Orlev Gabbay of New York City, Avi Salomon and Maytal Salomon of Jericho, NY, Rami Salomon and Jacob Salomon of Brookline; four great-grandchildren- Noah Mountain and Benjamin Mountain of Newton, Talia Pinkus and Emmette Pinkus of Woodbury, NY.
