Dr. Alan Josephson died on October 11, 2026 at the age of 90. He was born on July 26,1936 in Hewlett, NY. He attended the Woodmere school system and then he matriculated at Tufts University in Medford MA for college. He knew that he wanted to go to Medical school and, being the planner that he was, he selected Tufts partly because their medical school accepts a high percentage of students from the undergraduate school. His plan worked and he attended Tufts Medical School with the goal of becoming a surgeon. On December 2, 1961, during his final year of medical school, he married the love of his life, Judith Nemzoff. They had 2 children, a daughter Jamie and a son, Jeff, and over 64 years of marriage, they had 5 dogs, spoiling each one more than the last.
He did his internship at UCLA Medical Center and his residency in the Bronx at Albert Einstein Medical Center. After residency he entered the army as a surgeon and served for 14 months in Korea. Once out of the army, he and his family settled in Providence, Rhode Island where he entered a small private practice group working out of the Miriam Hospital. He lived in RI for the next 18 years enjoying his career and making wonderful friends. After RI, his journey took him to Palos Verdes, CA where he was the surgeon in a multispecialty group for 15 years.
As he was getting older, he did not want to retire but wanted to cut back. So, he took some courses in emergency medicine and switched to urgent care for their move to Arizona. They spent the next 21 years in Arizona where he continued to work 30-40 hours as an urgent care doctor. Though some might see this as full time, he felt semi-retired as it was shift work with no pager or being on call. He did this work until he was 80 when he and Judi moved to Massachusetts to be near his daughter and her family. He finally retired!
However, his love of medicine was lifelong, and into his 80s he continued volunteering at the local hospital with his dog, Hunter, visiting patients and spreading cheer. And he continued to serve as the medical consultant to the whole family, a truly attentive, caring, and intelligent diagnostician, that everyone could always count on for the best advice.
During Alan’s 10 years in Methuen, MA, he got involved in his over 55 community as an active participant in Social Committee events and a poker group and he founded a group called the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out). He loved spending time outside with his dog Shayna and his neighbors, going to the gym, seeing his grandchildren, and chatting with absolutely anyone and everyone. Alan truly loved dining out with neighbors and friends. Poker night was his absolute favorite, where he was known for sharing stories, telling jokes, and always attempting to hide a winning hand.
Alan’s smiling face and warm spirit will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife Judi, children Jamie and Dave Brown and Jeff and Karen Josephson, four grandchildren Josh Brown and his wife Julie Sanduski, Kyra and Talia Brown and two brothers and their wives, Andrew and Andrea Josephson and Martin and Janie Josephson.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 15th at 10:30 AM at Temple Emanuel, 7 Haggetts Pond Road, Andover, MA followed by a private burial.
Shiva will be Thursday, October 15th from 7-9 PM at the family home and again on Sunday, October 18th from 2:30-5:00 PM at the home of Jamie and Dave Brown.
