Jan. 13, 1929 - Aug. 14, 2024
A “force of nature,” as her eldest grandchild described her, Anita Kurland passed away at her home in Washington, D.C., age 95. Whether shepherding three small children through a nine-month stay in the Netherlands early in her marriage or volunteering at the information desks of D.C. institutions like the Kennedy Center and Smithsonian (Air and Space and American History) for over 40 years, she had a large, outgoing personality, a keen interest in other people, both immediate family and complete strangers, and a wide smile and hearty laugh.
Known to family and close friends as “Chickie,” Anita was born and raised in Boston and lived most of her life in Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Jordan E. Kurland, who passed away in January of 2016. She leaves behind four children, Harold Kurland (Christine), of Rochester, N.Y., Stuart Kurland (Donna), of Pittsburgh, PA, Sheila Putnam, of Chebeague Island, ME, and Jonathan Kurland (Anne), of Juneau, AK, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; she is also survived by her younger sister, Marilyn Weene, of Lincoln, MA, four nieces, and two nephews.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by the Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 1668 Beacon St., Brookline. There will be a grave-side service starting at 11:00 Monday, August 19, 2024, and immediate interment—with her husband—in the New Temple Tifereth Israel of Winthrop Cemetery, Fuller St., Everett, MA.
