Barrie Sanford Greiff, M.D.

Barrie Sanford Greiff, M.D., passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023 at the age of 88. He was the beloved husband to his wife Carole for 62 years, loving father to his three children Loren (Mark), Doug (Beatriz) and Rusty (Elizabeth), and cherished grandfather to his seven grandchildren, A.J., Sam, Theo, Noah, Isabela, Diego and Isaak. He was the son of the late Philip and Billie Greiff, and older brother to Daniel and Barbara. Barrie was an avid collector of antique cribbage boards, loved to play squash and tennis, enjoyed campy horror films, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and write creative, thought-provoking annual holiday cards.

Professionally, Barrie was a psychiatrist for over 50 years, including being faculty member to the Harvard Business School for two decades, where he pioneered a unique course entitled "The Executive Family" dealing with self, family and work life. Barrie authored five books and consulted for a wide range of organizations and privately held family businesses. He maintained a private practice throughout his career and was an innovator in the field of psychiatry, while always emphasizing and prioritizing an unwavering commitment to the well-being of his patients. He was a global thought-leader, who lectured and served as a board member for a number of public and privately held companies.

Barrie was an active and engaged member of Temple Emanuel for over 40 years, involved donor and volunteer of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, and consultant to a number of diverse faith-based and other non-profit charities. He also dutifully served his country in the Navy at the Bethesda Naval Hospital.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Temple Emanuel, 385 Ward Street, Newton, MA. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon, MA. Shiva will be announced at the service.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Carole and Barrie Greiff Educational Fund at Temple Emanuel or to Combined Jewish Philanthropies – Bronfman Center for Jewish Life Fund.
