Beatrice (née Hartman) Weber, known as Bea, died peacefully at her home in Brookline, MA, on Wednesday, May 8. She was 103 years old. Bea was born on February 29, 1916, in Newark, NJ. She was the first child born to Mamie and Philip Hartman, who were recent immigrants from Minsk, in what is now Belarus.
Bea met Al Weber on a blind date. They married in Newark’s City Hall in 1937. Over the years they lived in Havana; New York City; Westfield, NJ; and Beverly Hills, CA. After she was widowed, Bea moved to London, and eventually to Brookline at age 98.
Bea was an avid cook who threw elaborate dinner parties in Manhattan, and would bake a table full of desserts for Thanksgiving. She attended and graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in her 50s, and studied French in France. She loved to travel, and would often befriend chefs and maître d’s. Bea spoke Yiddish, Spanish, and French.
Bea adored live theatre, especially musicals, as well as the movies. She would purchase two copies of the same LP and stack them on different sides so as not to have to interrupt the music’s flow.
Bea was predeceased by her husband, Al; parents Mamie and Phil; daughter Jill; great granddaughter Grace; siblings Doris and Norman; and niece Terry.
Bea will always be remembered and loved by her son William (Suzanne); grandchildren Jennifer, James (Katherine), Rebecca (Stephen), Matthew (Rachel); great grandchildren Claire, Peter, Amelia, Charlotte, Leon; nephews Richard, Robert, Jon and niece Diana; and numerous family and friends.
