

Dr. Bennett Gurian of Brookline MA, was born in New Haven CT, May 21, 1932. He received his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University, 1954, M.S. from Brown University, 1956, and Doctor of Medicine from Boston University, 1965. He was Senior Researcher in Neurochemistry, Massachusetts General Hospital, and was appointed Director of Geriatrics and founder/director of Positive Aging Services, the national model of community-focused mental health services for the elderly based at a community mental health center.
Dr. Gurian was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Past President of the Mass Gerontology Association, Chairman of the Clinical Medicine Section of the Gerontological Society of America, National Vice President of Physicians For Social Responsibility, was a consultant to the United States Department of Justice, and served on many, many boards. He was widely published and had received many awards and honors.
His life was enriched by his love for family, his friends and the arts. He is survived by his wife of 40 years Tanya, pre-deceased by his son Aaron Gurian, survived by children Dr. Josef Gurian (Karen), Eve Gurian-Wachhaus (Aaron), Ateret Violet Shmuel, Max Gurian, Stephanie Cook, and Grandchildren Eliana, Kaita, Sam, Margo, Lowen, Helena, Gustav, Oriya, Aviv, Daniel and Haley.
