Charlotte (Shoul) Backman, age 91 years, passed away peacefully at her Dedham, MA, home on Sunday, February 28, 2021, with her loving husband, Irving Backman, at her side on the very week of their 69th wedding anniversary.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband Irving, son Larry Backman & his wife Judith Hoffman of Falmouth, MA, and daughter Ellen Kent & her husband Dana Kent of Brandon, FL. Another daughter Joan predeceased her. Charlotte is also the cherished grandmother of Jenna Friedman & her husband Daniel Friedman of Columbus, OH; Allison Gasca-Backman & her husband Santiago Gasca of Annandale, VA; Caren Hoffman of New York City; Sam Hoffman of Brick, NJ; Yaakov Kent & his wife Elisheva of Jerusalem; and Chana Glebocki & her husband Yochanan, also of Jerusalem. Charlotte also is fondly remembered by five great-grandchildren: Miriam, Rachel and Sarah Kent, Rachel Esther Glebocki and Felix Friedman. She was the dear sister of the late Melvin Shoul and Beatrice Shoul, and a loving aunt and great-aunt to numerous other relatives. Charlotte is also mourned by her former daughter-in-law, Carol Sarshik.
Born in Newburyport, MA to Ida (Brudno) Shoul & Jacob Shoul, Charlotte later lived in Newton and attended Choate School. In 1950 she graduated from Colby College, cum laude with Phi Beta Kappa honors. She and Irving married in 1952 and resided in Newton.
Charlotte was a tireless fundraiser for the Combined Jewish Philanthropies and B’nai B’rith and delighted in helping people in need through her charitable efforts. As a youth, she enjoyed playing tennis. Her lifelong passion to learn about everything led her to become one of Boston College’s oldest students as she frequently enrolled to take courses in her later years. She voraciously read books and generously shared her insights with friends; when playing bridge, though, she was a fierce competitor and prided herself on knowing every move.
Due to the current health crisis, funeral services are private.
Shiva observances will be held virtually via Zoom on Thursday evening, March 4, and Sunday, March 7; please contact a family member for details.
In lieu of sending flowers, donations can be made to the Combined Jewish Philanthropies, www.cjp.org
