Chester David Mitchell of Lexington, formerly of Belmont, age 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 26, 2018. Chester, born in Brooklyn, NY was the beloved youngest son of the late Naomi & Jacob Mitchell. Chester, a veteran, served in the United States Navy, graduated from Ohio University in 1948. In 1949 he married his college sweetheart Doris Wheeler of Cambridge, MA. Together they raised three children and carried on the legacy of the S&S Restaurant, their family business established 1919 in Inman Square, Cambridge.
Chet adored his family, as well as the many generations of employees and customers of their family restaurant. He was an avid bridge player, energetic squash competitor and a keen fisherman who loved the sea. For over 65 years he was a member of the Beth-El Temple in Belmont, MA. He was an active member of the Cambridge YMCA, Massachusetts Restaurant Association, Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and the Inman Square Business Association.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dor, their loving children Aimee Baum, Marcy & Miron Yakuel, Gary Mitchell & his fiancée Betsy Dangel, as well as his grandchildren Andrew & his wife Leslie, Lawrence Baum, Laura & her husband Fred MacFadgen, Carolyn Mitchell, Michael and Daniela Yakuel, Alexander Dangel and great-grandchildren Kiva, Ben, and Jack Baum. Loving brother of the late Seymour & his wife Arlene and Cynthia Mitchell. Predeceased by Robert & Carole Wheeler, survived by Joseph & Sandra Wheeler and many loving nieces and nephews.
With a gifted voice, Chester was a talented baritone who brought joy to those around him. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to all his wonderful caregivers, who greatly enriched the last years of his life. Chester was a very caring and compassionate person who loved and was beloved by all.
Services at the Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St, Brookline on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 1:00pm. Burial to follow at Ashkenaz of Cambridge Cemetery, 232 Fuller St., Everett.
Shiva to follow at Ryles Jazz Club, 212 Hampshire St, Cambridge from 4-7pm. Shiva on Thursday at the S&S Restaurant, 1334 Cambridge St., Cambridge from 2-4pm & 7-9pm.
