In addition to Joel, Dale is survived by: her children, Robin Langer Jones and Scott Jones of Haverstraw, NY, and Melissa Langer Ellis and Morris Housen of Boston, MA; her seven beloved grandchildren, Michael Jones and Christina Bernardo Jones of Brooklyn, NY, Reni Ellis and David Slotnick of Belmont, MA, Richard Jones of New York, NY, and Lindsay Ellis and Kristian Lenderman of Washington, DC; and her six great-grandchildren, her absolute pride and joy: Noah, Henry, Asa, Julie, Simon and Elizabeth.
She was predeceased by her parents, Leola (Kaufmann) Polland and Reynold Polland, and by her adored sister, Phyllis (Polland) Sallinger.
Dale also leaves her brother-in-law, Don Sallinger, her niece and nephews, Mark Sallinger and David Toland, and Traci (Sallinger) Davis and Terry Davis and their children, Mitchell, Lee and Elaine.
She is also survived by Marcel and Vivian Unger, who became family over many decades of friendship, and by their children and grandchildren. Together, Dale, Joel, Marcel and Vivian shared a lifetime of laughter, support and love.
Dale was born in Chicago, IL, and grew up in Mount Vernon, NY, where she attended A.B. Davis High School and met and fell in love with Joel when she was 16 years old. After graduation, her family moved to Dallas, TX, and Dale continued her education at the University of Texas at Austin. Although she eventually returned to New York, Texas always held a special place in her heart. She returned to spend holidays and special occasions with family, visit her favorite restaurants and reconnect with the place she loved. In true Dale fashion, the song The Eyes of Texas found its way into every Seder she hosted.
Dale raised her family in White Plains, NY, where she built a home filled with love, laughter, good food and two standard poodles – Countess and Candy. A phenomenal cook and baker, she took enormous pleasure in feeding the people she loved and hosting holiday celebrations and gatherings of family and friends. Her annual Rosh Hashanah open house was legendary.
Dale was deeply committed to her community. She devoted many years to the United Hebrew Geriatric Center in New Rochelle, NY, where she volunteered and held a leadership role. She was an avid golfer, loved to travel and treasured the friendships she cultivated throughout her life.
Above all, Dale cherished her family. Her grandchildren were the lights of her life. She never missed a ball game, dance recital, play, birthday party or graduation. Equally as joyful were the Saturday morning cartoons, hours swimming in the pool and card games. Sleepovers, baking together, celebrating holidays and Friday phone calls were among her greatest pleasures. She delighted in every milestone and found her greatest happiness in being surrounded by the generations of family she loved so dearly. She often told her grandchildren, “I love you with all my heart.”
Dale spent her retirement years in West Palm Beach, Florida, enjoying golf, weekly bridge and canasta games, knitting and time with family and friends. She adored her dogs Jake and Rusty. She had photos of loved ones displayed all over the house and filled bowls with candy whenever the kids came to visit. Her final knitting project, a beautiful patchwork blanket, was lovingly completed by her granddaughter Reni and rested on her bed in her final days.
Dale was loyal, empathetic, generous, strong and deeply devoted to the people she loved. She expressed her love through a lifetime of thoughtful gestures, shared traditions and unwavering commitment to family and friends.
She enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her. She will be forever loved and deeply missed.
A service and burial will be held on November 1 at 11:00 AM at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, 80 Commerce Street, Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions honoring Dale’s memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
May her memory be for a blessing.
