Debra Bradley Ruder

Obituary of Debra Bradley Ruder
IN THE CARE OF

Levine Chapels

...

With sad hearts, we announce that Debra Bradley Ruder, 67, passed away at 4:30 in the morning on July 13, 2026, in Boston, surrounded by her loving family. Debbie was a resilient and powerful person who believed passionately in the might of the written word and the intrinsic goodness of people. She was deeply dedicated to her family and friends, and her absence will be felt and mourned across her many communities.

Debbie was born on October 27, 1958, to Trudy Festinger and Dan F. Bradley. She was the beloved granddaughter of New York City Justice Justine Wise Polier. As a student, she attended the Ethical Culture Fieldston School and later attended Brown University (Class of 1980). Places special to her heart included family homes in Omena, Michigan, and Lake Placid, New York; Camp Walden in Maine; and the Berkshires, where she found a second community of friends and enjoyed nature and cultural events.

Debbie began her impressive career as a journalist for the Washington Star, the Daily Hampshire Gazette, and the Tampa Tribune before becoming News Director at Smith College and a staff writer at the Harvard University Gazette. Debbie went on to serve as Assistant Director in Harvard University’s Office of News and Public Affairs, then became Associate Director of Communications at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute before establishing herself as a freelance writer and editor. As an author, Debbie’s excellence was recognized by the American Medical Writers Association, the New England Society for Healthcare Communications, the Association for Women in Communications, and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

In January 1991, Debbie went on a blind date with a nice Jewish boy named Eric Ruder, and the two fell in love over a plate of Eggs Benedict. One year later, they were engaged and would go on to share thirty-five years of marriage, two beautiful children, and a grandchild. Debbie was immensely proud of her family and vigilant in her love and care for them. Her home is filled with pictures of the people she loved and the adventures and joys they shared, clear evidence of a life well lived. Debbie was a gifted photographer who had a knack for capturing the moment and understood the importance of documenting and sharing life’s memories. Her smile was bright and beautiful, and she was valued for her rare combination of optimism and pragmatism.

Debbie overcame significant health challenges throughout her life, including Hodgkin lymphoma in her senior year at Brown and decades of complications related to that treatment, including heart valve replacement surgery in 2025. In spite of this, she was never bitter or fearful in the face of adversity. Debbie inhabited her body joyfully, and never more so than when she was dancing. Debbie drew her strength and energy from her love of dance, music, and the performing arts. She approached life with urgency and put her faith in humanity, science, hard work, and social justice. Her many brushes with death and the loss of her father when she was twelve taught Debbie the importance of “grabbing life by the lapels” and saying goodbye properly to the people you love in whatever way you can.

Debbie is survived by Eric Ruder (husband), Trudy Festinger (mother), Josh Ruder (son), Ethan Ruder (son), Ashley Kramer (daughter-in-law), Emily Rubin (daughter-in-law), Trillium Kramer-Ruder (grandson), Jeremy Bradley (brother), and Dan Bradley (brother). For those of us who have the difficult work of saying goodbye to Debbie, we feel her loss keenly, but we also feel her presence intensely as she reminds us to wash our hands, seize the moment, love urgently, and take care of each other.

Shiva will be observed on Thursday, July 16, from 7:00–9:00 PM at Temple Beth Elohim, 10 Bethel Road, Wellesley, MA 02481. A memorial service is being planned for a future date.

Donations in Debbie’s honor may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Perini Survivorship Center, Brown University, and Ethical Culture Fieldston School.
