Edward (Ed) Allen Botan, age 86, a long time Nashua resident passed away peacefully on February 14, 2012. Ed was an accomplished and well known scientist holding four degrees including a Masters in Chemistry as well as a Ph.D. in Microbiology from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. During his career, Ed was involved in cutting edge research and science. Ed wrote and contributed to many scientific papers on topics such as, clean room technology for the assembly and sterilization of spacecraft hardware, the development of the life science testing package for NASA's Mariner Mars landing craft and other space related topics. Later in his career Ed transitioned into the bio-medical aspects of his expertise. Along with two other partners, Ed founded Hospital Service Technology (HST), a company which provided agar cultural media bases to hospitals and laboratories to grow cultures and assist in micro-propagation. After selling HST, Ed worked with BARD Biomedical in leading edge vascular grafting technology and artificial blood vessel technology. In his spare time, Ed was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fresh and salt water fishing as well as camping with his family. He was also an avid reader with a love of history, both ancient and modern. Ed was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts the son of the late Benjamin Botan and Sarah (Block) Botan. He was predeceased by his wife, Wilma "Vicki" (Fogelsohn) Botan, and his sister Francis (Botan) Feinzig and half brother Morton Bovarnick. Ed leaves his children, Robin E. F. (Botan) Levine, son-in-law Joel Levine, granddaughter Kaylee Levine of Merrimack, NH, son Michael Botan and daughter-in-law Kimberly (Phillips) Botan, of Hudson, NH, and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral will be held at the Montefiore Cemetery, 125 Pulpit Rock Road, Pelham, NH on Thursday, February 16th, at 1:00 P.M. Memorial observance will be at the home of Michael & Kimberly Botan, following interment until 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the NH Veterans Home, 139 Winter St., Tilton, NH 03276. Arrangements under the direction of Levine Chapels, Brookline, MA.
