Dr. Eli Abraham Etscovitz, 90, of Dedham, MA, formerly of Newton, MA, entered into eternal rest on July 10, 2013, in his home. Beloved husband of the late Irma F. (Hoffman) Etscovitz with whom he shared 69 years of marriage. Devoted father of Larry Etscovitz of Kittery, ME, Jacob A. Esher, Esq. of Beverly, MA and Diane Dolin & her husband Dr. Scott L. Dolin of West Hartford, CT. Loving brother of Rose Leah Kazis & her husband Dr. Albert Kazis of Brookline, Harry Etscovitz and his wife Marilyn, both deceased. Loving brother-in-law to Arlene Hecht and her late husband Dr. Sanford D. Hecht, Robert J. Hoffman Esq. and his wife Phyllis. Cherished grandfather of Benjamin Etscovitz and his wife Alexandra, Joel and Samantha Esher, Rachel and Adam Dolin, and great-grandchild Bella Etscovitz. Loving uncle of several nieces and nephews.
Born 4-18-23 in Brooklyn, New York, Eli spent his early years in Fort Kent, Maine where he attended local schools, graduating 1941 as valedictorian of his high school class. Eli received a BA degree from Harvard College, class of 1945, graduated Tufts Medical School, Boston, 1948, and trained at Boston City Hospital in Radiology, obtaining a certificate from The American Board of Radiology in 1950. He rose to the rank of Captain in the US Air Force from 1951-53 in Wiesbaden, Germany as Chief of Radiology for the 495th Medical Group. He was Chief of Radiology at Carey Memorial Hospital in Caribou, ME from 1956-66, also serving a number of local hospitals in Maine and New Brunswick. Eli also taught Bar-Mitzvahs during these years.
Moving with his family to Massachusetts, Eli practiced at The New England Memorial Hospital in Stoneham from 1966-2003, where he became Chief of Radiology, also serving at the Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport and area hospitals in Lawrence and Amesbury. He was a member of the MA Medical Society, American Medical Society, American Board of Radiology, MA Radiological Society, New England Roentgen Ray Society and Fellow of the American College of Radiology. Eli also served as President of the MA Radiological Society. A life-time Mason of Lodge #209 in Fort Kent, ME, Eli received his 50 year pin.
Services will be held Sunday, July 14th at 12 Noon, Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 1668 Beacon Street, BROOKLINE. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
Shiva will be held at Newbridge on the Charles, Dedham, MA on Sunday from 3 to 6 pm in the Synagogue, and on Sunday and Monday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Shiva will also be held in the home of Dr. Scott L. & Diane Dolin on Tuesday, July 16th from 7 to 9:30, with evening service at 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Eli’s memory may include Tufts University School of Medicine, Hospice of the Good Shepherd and Hebrew Senior Life.
