I send my sincere sympathy to Ina and family.  I was just told of Elliot's death.  I worked with Elliot at Syracuse University  in the 80's and was blessed with his company many times at my home with my family for dinner.  He always was so charming and forever entertaining as my guest.  He will be sincerely missed by many. RIP Sandy Pines (Donigan).



I just found this obituary and must write a note about my professor Elliot Gant. I had the absolute pleasure of being one of his students during my college years at Florida International University from 1989-1992. I can still remember the first time I met him, he was dressed in a three piece suit and addressed our class with such a distinguished and professional demeanor. His first words I remember like it was today, "I will treat each of you like the real world does. The door will be locked at the bell and no one that is late will enter. In the professional world, you make a statement with your clothes and how you carry yourself." He set the tone and always commanded our attention. His stories were amazing and they transcended you as he spoke each word. I could visualize these stories and truly felt like I was in the room as it happened. One distinct story I remember so vividly was when a young man walked into the Gant offices requesting to have his thin ties sold with the Gant dress shirts. The offer was declined and after many years it was discovered that that young man today is known around the world as Ralph Loren. As I graduated college, I requested a letter of recommendation and was truly honored by the kind and profound words he wrote. A letter that I would still cherish today. His impact on me as a student has carried over into my professional career over the many years. I often think about this amazing professor that truly left a significant mark. On a personal note, thank you Mr. Gant for making such an big impact on me. I promise you I will always live by the words you spoke and never be late for any sales calls! Dear Ina and Family:

It was with sadness that I read of Elliot's death.  I want to express condolences and prayers on behalf of the family of Bernie & Martha Rosenberg.  Although it is a time of loss and sadness that reconnects the families, my memories are firmly rooted in the 1960's, 70's, 80's, and even into the 90's, when the mention of Gant would resonate in the Rosenberg home with reverence, respect and love.  My dad's relationship extended well beyond Gant Shirtmakers ... Bernie felt like a brother to Marty and Elliot.  In the Gant file kept in Bernie's desk, there is a letter dated 1968 from Elliot to Bernie expressing love and well wishes for a full and speedy recovery after his heart attack; and an admonition to take it easy and heal before returning to the New Haven office.  The sense of familial interconnection and caring extended for many decades, even into the 90's, well beyond the sale of Gant to Consolidated Foods (aka Sara Lee).  For several years prior to Bernie's death in 2014, he expressed concern and interest in Elliot's health and well-being and attempted to make contact on several occasions, albeit, without success.

May Elliot's memory always be for a blessing.

In the mid 1960s, my father worked at Gant and I did a stint in the cutting room. I still remember the gorgeous fabrics we spread and the sense of quality that permeated the entire organization. The shirts we made then are still the benchmark for style and quality
