Eric E. Ungar passed away peacefully at home on June 14, 2026 at the age of 99.
Eric was born in Vienna, Austria on November 12, 1926 son of Isidor and Sabine Ungar (z”l), predeceased by his brother Fred. He lived a long life devoted to family, religion, science, and learning.
At the age of 12, he and his family escaped the Nazis shortly before Eric’s family would have been deported to a concentration camp. After coming to the US, Eric had his Bar Mitzvah which began his journey into a life of study and Jewish observance.
After graduating from Washington University (BS), University of New Mexico (MS) and New York University (PhD), he devoted his professional life to the science of Sound and Vibration. He worked for 35 years at BBN and 25 years at Acentech, completing patent reviews until the age of 95 when he decided it was truly time to retire. He published books, wrote chapters, and won many outstanding achievement awards.
He was an active member of Temple Emanuel serving in both ritual and leadership roles. If you were at services on Shabbat morning, you could count on seeing Eric standing in the back welcoming members and ushering with a smile.
His greatest blessing was his family - his wife Goldie (of 75 years), 4 daughters: Judy Ungar Fishman, Sue Green (Matt), Ellen Ungar Borgenicht (Fred) and Sharon Ungar Lane (Scott), 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
