Evelyn H. Malkin died April 30, 2023 at the age of 94, surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Sidney H. Malkin, and her parents, Charlotte and Maurice Helfant.
Evelyn was born in Boston, MA. She attended Colby College and left after two years to marry Sidney in 1946. They were married for 58 years—years full of travel, family ski trips, and family celebratory meals. In 1969 she received her BA from Boston University, earning her BA while raising 5 kids. She received her MSW from Simmons College in 1974.
Evelyn and Sidney lived in Greenwich Village and Kings Point, NY prior to moving to Wayland, MA, where for 40 years, Evelyn was very active in the community, focused on helping youth and families. One of Evelyn’s favorite places was their home in Stockbridge, VT, where she and
Sidney spent over 40 years relaxing, watching wildlife, and enjoying the serenity and the caring neighbors.
After Sidney’s death, Evelyn moved to Cambridge, MA. She loved art, travel, museums, reading, friends of all ages, dance, music, theatre, food, wine, and the Cambridge Public Library and its librarians. She enjoyed talking, connecting, and helping people.
She was passionate about her work as an oncology social worker at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) for about 30 years in the Proton Center, mostly in pediatrics. She was very involved in establishing the Healing Garden at MGH, with the assistance of Dr Shipley and the Friends of the MGH Cancer Center.
Evelyn is survived by her brother, Murray Helfant and her five children and their partners: James Malkin (Joan), Nancy Carr (Robert), Peter Malkin (Mary), Cathy Malkin (Bill Meltzer), Alison Malkin (Rich Comeau) and her might-as-well-be-son, Bob Osmond (Annie Yinsakulchai).
She leaves behind nine grandchildren and their partners: Rachel Goulding (Peter), Rebecca Rizzo (James), Matthew Carr (Jena), Jessica Mason (Greg), Alexander Malkin (Kate Welsh), Jarrod Malkin, Michael Malkin (Ali Harris), Matthew Malkin, and Evan Comeau.
Four informally adopted grandchildren also feel this loss: Abigail Dunkin, Austin Garrison, Andrew Garrison, and Alexander Garrison.
Evelyn was devoted to her children, grandchildren and also great-grandchildren of whom she has nine: Mia Malkin; Miles and Reed Goulding; Sydney Rizzo; Luca, Anders, and Estelle Mason; Finn Carr; and Julian Malkin.
She will be greatly missed by her family and the many friends whose lives she touched with warmth, generosity and caring.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm, Thursday, May 4, at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St; Brookline, MA. Please wear bright colors to help celebrate Evelyn’s lively life. Contributions—in lieu of flowers—may be made to the Healing Garden at The Massachusetts General Hospital.
