Evelyn Roslyn (Bercowitz) Opat passed away in her home in Temecula, CA on Friday, August 20, 2021 at the age of 101. She was born on November 4, 1919 in Brooklyn, NY to Fanny and David Bercowitz, Romanian immigrants. She had an older brother Bernard and has a younger brother Calvin.
Evelyn was known as Roz by her family and friends. She was the first woman in her family to graduate from college, attending Hunter College in New York City. She went on to become a bookkeeper until her retirement in the early1990s. Roz raised her four daughters in New York and Connecticut, where she and her husband Joseph Opat owned several fabric stores. Following their youngest’s graduation from high school, Roz and Joe moved to Miami and spent 33 years there. Roz’s years in Miami were spent surrounded by friends, living near the beach, and were filled with regular visits from her family. Her warm and easy-going nature made her beloved by all who met her.
In 2013 Roz moved to Temecula, CA to be closer to her three youngest daughters. The highlight of her life revolved around family because nothing was more important to her. Roz is survived by her four daughters: Dianne (Deena) and Michael Blau of Brookline, MA, Lorraine and Bruce Kramer of San Pedro, CA, June and Jimmy Zeiner of San Diego, CA, Gail and Jim King of Oakland, CA, her brother Calvin Sanders, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
