Gary Sales, of Framingham, entered into rest on Monday, June 17, 2019. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Herman and Natalie (Silverberg) Sales. Beloved husband of Frances (Gordon) Sales, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2014.
The first member of the Sales family to graduate from college, he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Brooklyn College. He later achieved his Master of Science Degree and PhD in Physics from Penn State University. Gary dedicated much of his life to studying the propagation of radio waves in the ionosphere. He worked for the US Air Force at Hanscom Air Force Base for many years. He later taught electrical engineering at UMass Lowell, and continued his research at The UMass Lowell Center for Atmospheric Research. In addition to his teaching work and decades of research, he enjoyed painting, bread baking, and antique clock restoration. He and his late wife, Fran, also cherished the time they spent at their vacation home in Ogunquit, ME. Gary’s family meant everything to him, and he had a special relationship with each grandchild.
Left to cherish Gary’s memory are his devoted daughters, Julie Snyder and her husband Michael, Leslie Sullivan and her husband Dan, Stephanie Nacawa and her husband André, and Valerie Geary and her husband Christopher; his cherished grandchildren, Nicole and Jessica Snyder, David Sullivan, Aaron, Abigail and Ava Nacawa, and Joshua and Gabriella Geary; and his devoted sister, Carol Gerstman and her husband Harvey.
A graveside service will be held at Beit Olam Cemetery, 60 Old Sudbury Rd., Wayland, MA, on Thursday, June 20, at 11:00 AM. Shiva will be observed immediately following services until 7:00 PM at the home of Valerie and Christopher Geary, continuing on Friday, June 21 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM at the home of Leslie and Dan Sullivan.
