

George Hyde, 93, of Lauderhill, FL, formerly of Hollywood, FL, died at home on February 19, 2012. George was born December 9, 1918 in Cambridge, MA to Abraham and Rose Hyde. George was the last of four brothers of the Hyde Athletic Shoe Company and his four sisters. He married Virginia Robinson on April 5th, 1942. After WWII, they settled in Newton, MA for the next 30 years.
George was a 1st lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was proud to be part of the 490th Bombardment Squadron and flew the Burma Hump as a Burma Bridge Buster. As a Veteran, he was still attending their reunions until he was 90 years old. George was one of the original owners of Scrub a Dub Car Wash. After that enterprise he and Ginny then moved to Florida and started the “Ginny Hyde” woman retail stores. Together they were both active and philanthropic in the Jewish Federation of Broward County but always found time for golf, tennis and bridge.
George leaves his two sons, Daniel and Andrew, his daughter Deborah and her husband Jon Halpert, his grandson David, his granddaughter Lisa & her husband Dave Mesicek and recently born great grandchildren, twins Alexa and Samara. Graveside services at the Beth El Cemetery, 776 Baker Street,West Roxbury, on Wednesday, February 22 at 12:00noon. Following the service, shiva will be at the home of Deborah and Jon Halpert through 3:00pm Friday.
