Gilbert T. Wolin, age 71, of Wayland, MA, died peacefully on September 5 after a brief illness. Born in Greenville, SC, Gil followed in his father’s footsteps and spent his entire career in business aviation after graduating from Lafayette College in 1972. Beginning with leading sales and marketing at Executive Jet Aviation (now NetJets), he then joined the nationwide FBO chain Combs Gates/AMR Combs as Vice President, Marketing. Gil was publisher of Business & Commercial Aviation magazine before joining TAG Aviation USA.
In 2013, with his wife as Managing Editor and partner Ray Ringston as Creative Director, he launched Business Aviation Advisor, a magazine for business aircraft and fractional share owners and users. A passionate advocate for the business aviation industry, Gil previously served on the Corporate Angel Network, NATA, and the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Presidential Advisory Boards.
An active member of Congregation Beth El of the Sudbury River Valley for more than 20 years, Gil also served the Town of Wayland on its Finance Committee. A lifelong athlete, he ran cross-country and track, completed six marathons, and participated in several 100-mile MS charity bike rides.
He was an avid reader of both nonfiction and fiction, and was especially proud of his almost-complete collection of early editions of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ works. He had a beautiful singing voice, and his eclectic taste in music ranged from the Beatles to jazz to prog rock to the standards.
He leaves his beloved wife, Gail Shapiro, five stepchildren, including: Wendie (Zach) Stokes, Tom (Michele) Fullerton, Suzanne Murphy (Hayden Melbourn), and Michael Murphy; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two sisters and two brothers; as well as a wide network of extended family, devoted friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Gil was predeceased by his parents, Robert E. and Maxine Loeb Wolin.
