Goldie (Birstein) Libon of Newton Centre and Falmouth passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at the age of 90 at her home with her family by her side. Daughter of Gedalia and Freda, beloved wife of the late Bert Libon of 69 years.
Born on August 18, 1927, she was raised in Boston and attended Boston Public Schools. She attended
Chamberlain School of Retailing in Boston in 1946. Goldie was active and deeply committed to providing leadership to women’s organizations. She was presented with the Award of Gratitude in recognition of a decade of dedicated service and devotion to the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston in May, 1983. Goldie was President of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged from 1984 to 1986 enabling countless elderly to live with dignity and comfort. She was a lifelong learner, taking classes at Boston College and attending opera with her husband Bert through their 80s.
She will be lovingly remembered by her sons Rob and Mark and their wives, Kristina and Joanne, Granddaughters Rachel and Courtney and their spouses Lantz and David; Ali and her husband Ryan; and her grandson Gregory. Great-grandchildren Omer and Shae Luz. She leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister Suki.
Goldie maintained extraordinarily close relationships with her family and many close friends. She was a lifelong member of Temple Shalom of Newton.
Her family wishes to thank the incredible care givers who provided such compassion and support that made her final days happy and comfortable; Siobhan O’Donnell, Maura Vainbrum and the other exceptional women who provided such loving care.
Funeral Services will be held at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St., Brookline on Wednesday, August 15 at 12noon. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham St., Sharon. Following the interment the family will be gathering at Goldie’s home until 7pm. Continuing on Thursday, August 16, from 4pm and 7pm.
