After graduating from Brookline High school and working for the Boston Globe, he got married and joined the Army in 1956. He, along with his wife Ellen, was stationed in Germany. They had many fond memories of their time in Germany together. Upon moving back to the United States, they spent most of the rest of their lives in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Harvey was known for his friendly personality and strong work ethic, working full time until the age of 86. Harvey worked for 50 years in the newspaper business, for both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald, and was a member of the Teamsters Union of New England. In addition, while working for both newspaper companies, he also sold newspapers at the Beth Israel and Brigham and Women’s hospitals for many years. This often required 18-20 hour work days to get the jobs done.
After finishing his time in the newspaper business, at the age of 67, he transitioned into a new career working for Newbury College and numerous security companies. At Newbury College, he particularly enjoyed interacting with the students, sharing stories with them and giving them advice.
Educationally, as an older adult, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University in 1975. He was very proud of this accomplishment.
More than anything, he enjoyed time with his wife and his family. Taking trips to London, Scotland and Maine in the summer gave him a lot of pleasure, because he did these with his family.
His ongoing support for his family was evident in all of the time and energy he put into helping his wife with her software startup company in the mid 1980’s, and always supporting her with her own educational endeavors. In addition, even with all of the hours he worked each week, he never missed a game, dance recital or any other important activity that his grandchildren had. He and Ellen were always there supporting their grandchildren.
Harvey especially enjoyed recreational time spent with his grandchildren playing chess, watching sports, rooting for the local teams and taking them on excursions to the movies and arcades.
Harvey was a hard working blue collar person who had a great sense of pride for his work, family and respected everyone he came in contact with. So many people would always comment on “what a gentleman” he was, regardless of the situation.
Harvey leaves behind his son William and daughter-in-law Kim of Holliston, grandson John of Medway and granddaughter Becki of Astoria, NY. Harvey’s late wife Ellen passed away on April 9, 2024.
The family will hold a private graveside service for Harvey.
His family appreciates the care that he received at the end of his life from the staff at Brookdale at Cushing Park Assisted Living in Framingham and Metrowest Hospice. Donations in Harvey’s name can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/
