

He grew up in New York City, graduated from City College of New York, and earned his Ph.D. in chemistry at Duke University. During World War II, he worked at the Explosives Research Laboratory in Pittsburgh, and then as a Section Leader at Los Alamos. He participated in the first atomic bomb test at Alamogordo, and then served on Tinian with the U.S. Air Force. After the war, he studied with James Franck as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Chicago, then worked as a professor of chemistry at Syracuse University from 1948 to 1957, and at Brandeis University from 1957 to 1989. Like many veterans of the Manhattan Project, Henry was active in the antinuclear and peace movements. In 1982 he helped found UCAM (United Campuses to Prevent Nuclear War), which had about 50 chapters at schools across the nation.
He also served on the board of CCO (Center for Campus Organizing), which fostered student activism at American universities. Henry was a Visiting Scientist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory; a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Hebrew University; a National Institutes of Health Fellow at the University of California, San Diego; a Guggenheim Fellow at the Weizmann Institute; and a long-time consultant to the Eastman Kodak Company. His national service included several government panels, study sections and committees of NASA, NIH, the National Research Council, and the Council of the American Chemical Society. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Henry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Suzanne Hodes, his son Joseph Linitz, his daughter-in-law Karen Linitz, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline, MA, 02446 on Sunday, November 30, at 11:00am followed by burial at Adath Jeshurun Cemetery, 350 Grove Street, West Roxbury.
