Jacob "Jack" Greenstein, age 95, of Wellesley formerly of Long Beach, NY, on Sunday, May 13, 2018. For 69 years, beloved husband of Irene (Stark) Greenstein. Son of Samuel and Fannie (Davidowitz) Greenstein. Loving father of Glenn Greenstein, Gary Greenstein & his wife Sharyn and predeceased by his daughter, Sharon Glazer. Dear father-in-law of Jon Glazer. Cherished grandfather of Dana Olmeda & her husband John, Jeffrey Glazer & his partner Brian Waldman, and Eric, Jake and Hanna Greenstein. Devoted brother of the late Ruth Gratt & her husband Milton, and brother-in-law of the late Frances & Herbie Margulies. Fond uncle to his nieces and nephews and their families.
Jack was born in Czechoslovakia and immigrated to the United States when he was 6. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in NY and attended Norwich University, studying engineering. He was a member of the Air Corps during WWII, repairing airplane engines. After being honorably discharged from the service, he followed in his father’s footsteps and went into the meat business. Jack was passionate about the stock market and later became a stockbroker. He returned to the meat business and owned and operated a butcher shop in Long Beach called “City Dressed” for many years.
Jack and the love of his life, Irene, shared a passion for dancing and traveling around the world. They cherished each other and were inseparable. They often came home from their travels with not only local art, but with fascinating stories of Jack trading currencies on the black markets and meeting interesting people like Raul Castro in Cuba and a Sheikh in Egypt. For many decades they took dance lessons and would drive to dancehalls in NYC and Long Island on Saturday evenings. Jack often carried both a pocket square and a flask in his sports jacket. Their favorite dance was the Argentinian tango but they were accomplished in many different dance styles. Jack’s favorite pastime was studying and investing in the stock market. If Irene wasn’t sitting on his lap, Jack could be found in his upstairs study, reading stock charts or business journals. They spent many fond summers at the beach with their family and friends, bodysurfing during the day and strolling along the boardwalk in the evenings. Jack, we will miss you dearly and will always carry your memory in our hearts.
The family will receive visitors at the home of Gary & Sharyn Greenstein on Sunday, May 20 from 4:00-8:00pm. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepard, www.gscommunitycare.org or a charity of your choice.
