Joan H. Saklad, a lifelong resident of Newton, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025. Just two weeks prior, she joyfully celebrated her 93rd birthday.
Joan was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Martin J. “Doc” Saklad. Together, they shared 71 wonderful years of marriage, celebrating their anniversary shortly before Doc’s passing in June.
She is survived by her sons Laurence (Laura) Saklad of Marlborough; Steven Saklad and his wife Michelle of Marlborough, along with their daughter Amanda; and Scott Saklad and his wife Lisa Progin Saklad of Sudbury. Joan was a devoted and loving grandmother to Matthew and his wife Olivia, Marc, Ryan, and Tyler.
A proud graduate of Adelphi College in New York, Joan earned her degree in business. Her commitment to her community was unwavering. One of her proudest accomplishments was her tireless advocacy for implementing a school lunch program in Newton, ensuring children no longer had to walk home for lunch and return to school afterward.
Joan’s love for Newton inspired her to seek a voice in its future. She was elected in 1973 to serve two terms on the Board of Aldermen, becoming the third woman to represent the entire city since its founding in 1874. Known for her integrity, she voted her conscience on every issue and remained independent in her endorsements, even when it challenged the status quo.
Her dedication to helping others extended beyond her time in office. Joan was always ready to assist anyone in need, often saying she would “help to get them taken care of.” She was known for her kind heart, her love of shopping, and her gift for listening. Her warmth, strength, and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A memorial gathering will take place at Bullfinchs Restaurant, 730 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in her honor at https://tinyurl.com/JoanSaklad
