Dear Carl: 

I read about Judy's death in the latest Harvard alumnae magazine and was shocked and saddened. What a beautiful woman she was! I remember her laugh, which was how she would often respond to something at first -- a kind of shrugging, warm, easy-to-listen-to laugh. And then she'd go on and explain. I lived next door to her freshman year. I remember her incredible singing voice. We would gather in her room to hear her sing. I forget whether she played the guitar, too -- I think so. She was all warmth, generosity and beauty. What I remember from those days is bouts of colitis, but now, reading the other messages, I realize that she must have spent most of her adult life in pain. I'm happy that she had a good marriage and gorgeous children.  I wish all of you the power to sustain good memories of the happiness that she was able to spread around. She was a good person in every way.

Having just read of Judy's death in the alumni bulletin I thought of her as I knew her in college.  We were in a production of The Beggar's Opera, she as Lucy Lockit, and she brought to the role her great vitality, charm, and humor, along with a lovely singing voice.  We seldom heard the singing voice off stage, but all of the other qualities were there in abundance.  I saw her only once since then -- a chance meeting in Harvard Square, perhaps fifteen years ago --  and I marveled at the complete woman she had become.  It is a great loss, even for those who knew her long ago and for a little time.

Dear Carl, I was so sorry to learn of Judy's death.  Judy and I worked together when we were both post-doctoral fellows at UHS.  I valued her as a colleague and a friend. Please accept my deepest sympathy at this sad time.  Sincerely, Emily Frank

Over the past 45+ years, because we and our children have been able to share so many important occasions together with your family, we are particularly sorry that at this time of overwhelming sadness we cannot be with you on Thursday.
Since learning yesterday of her death, our memories of Judy and of the Salzmans have come flooding back. With each call to Tobie, Stephanie, and Jessica, we together reflected on all that Judy meant to us – the rich memories of shared experiences in Watertown, Waban, Cape Cod and West Hartford-and more recently in Los Angeles and at a concert in Boston.
In one person, Judy brought together the most extraordinary range of qualities: a smile that could light up a room (and a laugh to go with it), bed rock brilliance, a noble bearing, extraordinary erudition, a wealth of knowledge from a lifetime of reading, tremendous creativity, extraordinary empathy, unimpeachable integrity, honesty and openness, tremendous courage and willpower, and a remarkable generosity of spirit. The wonderful recollections of our early years of friendship that she penned for our 40th wedding anniversary and for Sheila's 70th birthday books were characteristically warm, humorous, and generous. That she will not be able to read the words of this encomium makes us feel even sadder.
Faced with the burden of two major chronic illnesses, Judy never wavered from her determination to live a full life: as wife, mother, grandmother, fiction writer, researcher, therapist, and friend. Seeing Judy bedridden at the nadir of her fibromyalgia was overpowering. Seeing her triumph through sheer dint of will was magnificent. Listening to Judy's emotional pain following her colectomy was deeply moving. She felt she had compromised part of her being to cling to the life that mattered most: with Carl, her children, and grandchildren. Judy and Carl's love for each other, for their children, grandchildren and friendship network defined them as a couple.
After 45+ years, the name Judy triggers the words "and Carl". For Roger, Carl has been the closest of friends. We have been uninhibited as we shared our personal reflections at each stage of our lives when we have been together at ACNP and other places. For Sheila, the narrative with Judy seemed always to continue uninterrupted from their last meeting – as though no time had passed. For us, the Salzmans were one of a rare number of couples that we could truly say represented a friendship of four. The times that we have spent with Carl and Judy have been a treasure. Her absence now leaves a real void in our lives-and we can only imagine the wrenching feelings that you are experiencing at this time.
At this moment of grief, please accept our condolences. The charity suggested in the Boston Globe obituary reflects so much of what Judy was about: a commitment to a better world and the future of all children.
