

Kathleen Mary Schwartz was born in Kilskyre, County Meath Ireland; the daughter of William and Jane Farrelly. She attended primary and secondary schools in Kilskyre and graduated from nursing school in Bristol, England. Kathleen practiced nursing as a midwife in the slums of London. In 1956 she accepted an invitation to study and work at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Kathleen met Dr. Melvin Schwartz at the Mount Sinai Hospital Emergency room.
They married in 1960 and went to Israel to conduct a research study of Israelis of European, Yemenite and Bedouin origin. The study was sponsored by the National Heart Institute at Bethesda, Maryland. On returning to New York City, they studied a group of Yemenites living there.
Dr. Schwartz served as a Senior Surgeon in the United States Public Health Service. He worked at the Framingham Heart Study. Kathleen shared her husband’s interests while raising 3 sons: Daniel, Jonathan and Howard.
The Schwartz family settled in Chestnut Hill, MA. Kathleen and her husband formed a loved and respected Nurse/Physician team who practiced medicine for over 25 years in the Boston Suburbs. Kathleen’s nursing skills, devotion and kindness will be missed by her many patients.
A Graveside Service will be held TODAY, Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 11:00AM at Shara Tfilo Cemetery, 776 Baker St, W. ROXBURY. Memorial Observance will be held at the home of Jonathan Schwartz on Wednesday from 7-9PM. Immediately following services, friends and family are invited to gather at Waterford Restaurant, 2 Bridge Street, W. Roxbury. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Compassion Hospice Care, 800 Cummings Park Drive, Woburn, MA 01801.
