Lois Una ( Chasin) Dargo, wife of the late George Dargo, beloved mother of Stephen Dargo and Jessica Dargo Caplan & her husband Jody Caplan, sister of Joan Hersch, devoted grandmother of Sarah and Ethan Caplan, exceptional teacher, avid reader and foodie, passed away Monday night, December 4, 2017.
Honest, direct, strong, and fiercely independent to the end, Lois led her life on her own terms. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY in 1943 Lois had lived in Brookline, MA, raising her family, and teaching at the International School of Boston for over 30 years. After George passed away in 2012, Lois moved to Harbor Towers on the Boston waterfront with a view of Boston Harbor. She never got tired of following the patterns of the boats in the harbor, watching the planes taking off and landing from Logan, and exploring the North End and old Boston, always on foot.
Lois could have been an accomplished artist, but she thought oils were too messy. She loved kitchen gadgets, and was always appreciative of a good avocado slicer. She had a love/hate relationship with the gym, but she loved hating city traffic. She read two newspapers a day, had multiple Kindles bursting with hundreds of novels and biographies, and she loved quirky coffee table books. Her passion for unconventional travel was surpassed only by her dedication to her family and friends, especially Sarah and Ethan.
Lois’ courage and strength in dealing with her cancer was remarkable. Always with a positive outlook, a joke for the nurses, and never-ending thankfulness for the kind and talented team of doctors and nurses that treated her at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, she consistently handled herself with grace and a smile.
Lois was truly one of the good ones and her family and friends are simply heartbroken by this loss. She will be missed by many.
