“Life is for the living!”
We are very saddened that our family’s skipper, Louis K. Pollen of Peabody, slipped away at the age of 91 on October 31, 2018. Lou had a lot of wind in the sail with the captain’s daughters, Victoria Schlack, Nancee Hatagan, Lynnda Levine, Pamela Lindeboom and step-daughter Marjorie Pechet. His mates cherished him with 15 grandchildren: Becky, Austin, Gene, Heather, Adam, David, Michael, Melannie, Robben, Hillari, Abbie, Jacqueline, Erik Jan, Emily and Edward. The crew swelled in size with 17 great-grandchildren: Nevaeh, Lily, George, Allen, Rylen, Cody, Kya, Ashi, Rami, Nesi, Peni, Aurelia, Jameson, Dillan, Kiki, Vigo, Mai-Ly.
Lou launched his life in Chicago, Illinois and sailed through the University of Illinois, landing with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. He charted his ship with his family to Newton, Massachusetts. Our courageous skipper was an electrical engineer at GTE-Sylvania and a dedicated member of IEEE. Captain Lou’s life’s voyage revolved around sailing along the eastern seaboard as well as Mexico’s coastline. He was a life member of Palmer’s Cove Yacht Club in Salem.
He knew the ropes to carpentry thanks to his late father, Benjamin, who owned a hardware store. When there was a squall, Lou squared away whatever was necessary by building and repairing things, whether it was in his home or on one of his vessels.
