Passed away on November 29, 2018
Louise, age 93, of Chestnut Hill passed away Thursday, November 29, 2018. She set the quintessential example of a devoted and adored mother of Carol Goldman and Janet Frishman and loving grandmother to Jeffrey Frishman, Jason Frishman and Benjamin Goldman. For 71 wonderful years, Louise (Shaps) was married to her true love Herb, who predeceased her in May of 2018. They shared a bond and passion that was so special and uniquely perfect, that their marriage was an inspiration to all. They and their families knew each other since childhood.
Louise was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Boston University in 1946 and then volunteerism became a career for her. She made a commitment to actively support cancer research by becoming involved, as a member of Aid for Cancer Research, where she was president three times, for this small organization devoted to raising funds for cancer research.
The ACR medical advisory board imparted the importance of supporting outstanding research and treatment programs at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Louise was so impressed she decided to volunteer in the Development and Public Relations Department of Dana-Farber.
A few years later in 1976, a decision was made to establish the first Auxiliary at the Institute. Knowing of Louise’s experience in fundraising, she accepted the position of putting together the essentials needed to form an Auxiliary and worked as a liaison between the Auxiliary and the Institute. The Friends of DFCI went on to prove their importance, in the expanding needs of the Institute. Louise loved every minute working with dedicated and enthusiastic people, taking so much pride in what was being accomplished in those early years.
On retiring from her position, Louise became a member of the Friends Board and gained much satisfaction as chairman of many committees over the years, and as Executive Vice President. She was also made an Honorary Director for Life of the Friends. Louise found great pleasure from playing a part in the growth of an exceptional Auxiliary.
Louise and Herb have always been affiliated with numerous, charitable organizations and worthwhile endeavors, for which they shared a deep commitment. Their spirit of giving of themselves was constant and inspiring.
In her spare time Louise was a talented and creative artist working with oil paints for many years. Her approach evolved from traditional works to more modern and abstract paintings, that became her signature style. She and Herb always had a great appreciation for the arts.
Louise was kind, sensitive, thoughtful and caring. She was the epitome of sweetness. No one could have asked for a better wife, mother, grandmother or friend. She was one of a kind, very special and will truly be missed by all.
