Louise (Kaplan) Weinberg, of Brookline, MA, a social worker turned artist, died of complications from a rare neurologic disorder, dopa-responsive dystonia, on July 31, at the age of 69. Louise was daughter of Abner and Sylvia Kaplan, and granddaughter of Moses Ginsberg.
She attended the Fieldston School in New York City, graduated from Brandeis University, then obtained a masters degree in social work from Columbia University. After moving to Brookline, she practiced clinical social work in both agency and private practice settings, and taught in the Boston University School of Social Work. In her 50’s, she discovered the joys of drawing and painting, and ultimately left her social work practice to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, where she obtained a diploma in studio arts. In her second career, as an artist, Louise exhibited her work mainly in Boston and New York City, and participated in numerous solo and juried shows. Over many years, she taught drawing to hundreds of students at the Brookline Senior Center in a course she founded. Louise was also active in philanthropy, and served on the board of the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University.
Louise was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, David Weinberg, three children, Daniel Weinberg and his wife Holly, Allison Weinberg Barton and her husband Andrew, Emily Weinberg and her wife, Kate, and six grandchildren.
A date and location for a memorial service will be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Louise’s memory can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation or to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
