

DAY, Dr. Max, of Newton Centre, Massachusetts died on February 21 st at age 92, due to injuries suffered in a fall. He was born in Toronto, Canada on August 11, 1923 as Icek Maier Day (the Anglicized form of the original family surname, Tugfoigl). After earning a medical degree at the University of Toronto, Dr. Day completed a residency in psychiatry at Boston State Hospital, where he learned to treat psychotics and to conduct group therapy with "the power of the human personality,” as his teacher Elvin Semrad described it, in treating psychotics. He graduated from the Boston Psycho-analytic Institute in 1959 and began the practice of psychoanalysis. He conducted experience groups for training residents, psychology interns, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and other mental health trainees to learn about group therapy at Boston State Hospital, Massachusetts Mental Health Center, Boston University School of Medicine, the Department of Psychology and Schools of Social Work at Boston University, and at Children's Hospital. He taught in the Department of Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital for thirty-five years, served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Tufts Medical School, and taught ego psychology for two summers at Smith College. Throughout his life, he continued to pursue his interests in psychoanalysis, long-term intensive psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, and psychotherapy of psychotics, maintaining his practice until only a few years before his death. He served as president of the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy, and was awarded the Outstanding Psychiatrist Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society in 2013. An avid student of Jewish history and Biblical archaeology, his great interests lay in therapy, teaching, and his family, particularly his beloved wife of 66 years, Elvira Day. He is survived by Mrs. Elvira Day and their four children: David (married to Rosabel Kremer), Susan (married to Shalom Fisch), Matthew (married to Andrea Bevacqua), and Ari (married to Tieu-Bich Nguyen). He leaves nine grandchildren: Nachum Fisch, Chana Fisch, Miriam Fisch, Zachary Day, Yael Day, Alessandra Day, Nina Day, Emilia Day, and Sander Day. He also leaves a loving relative in New Jersey, Malkah Fisch, as well as many relatives in Ontario, Canada. Services will be held on Tuesday, February, 23 rd at 11:00 AM at Temple Emanuel, 385 Ward St., Newton Centre. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham St., Sharon. Shiva to be held immediately following services at his late residence through Friday, Feb. 26th until sundown, and will continue Saturday, Feb. 27th after sundown. Shiva will continue Sunday and Monday at his late residence. Shacharit prayers will be held at 7 AM with Minchah & Ma’ariv prayers beginning at 7:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, expression of sympathy in his memory may be sent to the American Friends of Hebrew University.
