Mayer “Mickey” Rabinovitz of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, formerly of Haverhill and Newton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, at the age of 90. He was the beloved husband of Carol J. Singer; devoted father of Dan Rabinovitz and his wife, Holly, of Needham, Massachusetts, and Laura Rabinovitz and her husband, Erik Esckilsen, of Burlington, Vermont; and cherished grandfather of Louis Rabinovitz and his wife Olivia Joy of Brookline, Massachusetts, Peter Rabinovitz of Manhattan, New York, and Stella and Lucy Esckilsen of Burlington, Vermont. He adored his children and grandchildren, all of whom adored him.
Mickey was raised in Haverhill, Massachusetts, by his loving mother, Gertrude Leavitt, with whom he was extremely close. He and his lifelong friend Herbert Phillips grew up with such modest means that they had to be careful not to schedule interviews with colleges back-to-back because they shared the same sport coat for interviews. He and Carol met on a double blind-date, where neither of them fancied the person with whom they had been set up. They were married in 1962.
From a young age, Mickey was passionate about tennis, a game he played regularly for more than 70 years. He graduated from Bowdoin College and Columbia Law School, receiving substantial merit scholarships from both institutions. Mickey began practicing law in 1961 and shortly thereafter joined the Boston law firm of Singer, Stoneman and Kurland. His work there focused on serving General Cinema Corporation, a client of his father-in-law, Harold Singer. That relationship eventually led to Mickey accepting a position as in-house real estate counsel for General Cinema. In 1991, years before the phrase “working remotely” became part of everyday life, Mickey moved to Maine. For the next 12 years, he continued practicing law from his home in Cumberland Foreside for General Cinema and its successor company, the Neiman Marcus Group. Throughout his career, Mickey was universally respected in the field of shopping center leasing.
Mickey remained active throughout his life. In addition to his lifelong passion for tennis, he was an avid squash player. He took up downhill skiing at age 50 and golf at age 60. He was also a lifelong lover of dogs, and when having a dog became impossible later in life, he changed the ringtone on his phone to the sound of a barking dog.
In 1954, Mickey and his best friend, Herb, attended the first Newport Jazz Festival, beginning a lifelong love of jazz music. While attending law school in New York, he frequented many of the city’s legendary jazz clubs, where he saw some of the greatest musicians of the era perform, including Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, and Chet Baker. His favorite vocalist was Sarah Vaughn.
His wisdom, guidance, support and humor will be forever missed. Services will be held at Levine Chapels in Brookline, Massachusetts on July 24, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
