Born in Framingham, MA on April 3, 1957, Michael was the beloved son of the late Charlie and Sylvia “Tippie” Burkin and younger brother of Diane Hirschberg. After the sudden discovery of stage 4 glioblastoma one year ago, he passed away on June 10, 2026.
For the last 17 years, Michael was the devoted partner and husband of Sonia Burkin — his best friend and greatest supporter. Together they built a life centered on family, laughter, and love. Their marriage was a testament to enduring commitment—one that grew stronger through every sail, delicious meal, adventure, and challenge they shared.
Above all, Michael’s greatest joy was his family. He was an affectionate and loyal father to Alec Burkin, Liza Birch, and Cello “Poopyface” Burkin. He celebrated their accomplishments, encouraged their dreams, and treasured every moment spent together. He welcomed Alec’s wife, Danielle Burkin and Liza’s partners, Tyson Birch, Jonesy Birch, and Chelsea Graham into the family with open arms.
One of the greatest blessings of his life was becoming a grandfather this past year to Eliyam Burkin and Jade Birch, who brought immeasurable happiness to his heart.
Michael is survived by his loving sister, Diane Hirschberg, brother-in-law Razy, nephew Zeke and niece Carli. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Maria Barrientos; sisters-in-law Maria Calderon, Claudia Calderon Gomez, and Mayela Calderon; brothers-in-law Julian Salcedo and Alexander Gomez; their children Valentina, Santiago, Axel, and Zarah; and many beloved extended family members.
Michael also treated his friends and colleagues like family, forming a close knit village. From Deerfield Academy to Trinity College to Suffolk Law to the FDIC to Temple Shir Tikva to La Amada and beyond, his ability to form, maintain, and nurture lasting relationships was unparalleled and a marvel to everyone around him.
One of his proudest accomplishments was founding and organizing Temple Shir Tivka’s annual Family Camp in Maine. For years, it brought over 50 families together in a fun and meaningful way to connect and practice our Jewish heritage in the woods and by the lake. Rabbis and cantors and parents and children played sports together, had Shabbat in the woods, and remained bonded for decades.
For more than thirty years, Michael served as counsel operating the Law Offices of Michael J. Burkin and National Asset Resolution; real estate practices focused on conveyance and acquisition financing via private equity. Michael was known for his grit, integrity, and ability to build lasting relationships.
A nearly lifelong resident of Massachusetts, Michael adored Boston and was well known throughout the city and region, just like his father. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of Boston’s streets, sports history, and restaurants, and was an aggressive jaywalker. Among his greatest passions were sailing, skiing, and golf. He was especially drawn to the sea and spent countless happy hours sailing Boston Harbor and the waters of New England, the Caribbean, and off the coast of Cancún. These activities reflected his adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors.
Those who knew Michael will remember his playful spirit, quick wit, confidence, and love of condiments. Whether throwing a frisbee, advising clients on deals, or satisfying his sweet tooth, Michael injected positivity everywhere he went. He was extremely talented at having fun, and always looked forward to what was coming next.
While his passing leaves an immense void, his family finds comfort in the memories he created, the lessons (and card games) he taught, and values he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A funeral will be held on Friday, June 12 at 1:00pm Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline, with a burial at Sharon Memorial Park to follow. Friends and family are invited to sit shiva on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14 from 3-7pm at Michael and Sonia’s home, on Monday, June 15 from 3-6pm at Liza Birch’s home, and on Friday June 19th from 4 - 8 pm at the Hirschberg Residence.
Donations to the National Brain Tumor Society at braintumor.org and to Razy Hirschberg’s Swim Across America page can be made in Michael’s honor –– to work towards a cure for this horrible, unforgiving disease.
