Richard J. Knopping

Richard J. Knopping, age 81, of Wayland, MA on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. Richard was long retired from the family business SMD Industries that served supermarkets throughout the Boston area. Richard’s late father, the family patriarch David, created the innovation of stocking non-food items at supermarkets. Richard’s late brother Aaron (Bud) Knopping, rounded out the business trio.

Richard also was the doting husband of 55 years to the late Sylvia C. Knopping (Cohen) who predeceased him by almost exactly six years. He was the devoted father of Ilene Knopping & Cliff Kolovson of Wayland and Steven Knopping & Marjorie Forman of North Andover. He also was the loving grandfather of Samantha Rose Kolovson, Jonah Knopping, & Jackson Knopping; fond uncle to his nieces and nephews.

He also leaves his sister Anne Miller and her husband Laurence of Little Rock, AK. His mother was Sophie (Cohen) Knopping late of Little Rock and Brookline, MA.

Services will be at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline on Sunday, February 3 at 10 am. Interment at Knights of Liberty Cemetery, Woburn.

Memorial observances at The Hills of Mainstone (Wayland) Clubhouse, 133 Hillside Drive, Wayland following interment until 4 pm and on Monday from 4-8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Newton-Wellesley Hospital ICU, CJP, Jimmy Fund, or to a charity of your choice.
