Richard H. Rubin

Richard H. Rubin, age 90, of Naples, FL and Newton, MA passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2021 of natural causes. Beloved husband of the late Barbara Diengott Rubin with whom he shared 55 years of marriage.

“Dick” was born in Boston, MA on October 13, 1930. He was the oldest child of Joseph and Henrietta Rubin and grew up (and UP) in Brookline, MA. He attended Phillips Andover Academy and then Harvard University for both his BA and MBA degrees. Following ROTC at Harvard, Dick served in the air force where he learned to fly but was too tall to fit properly in the cockpit!

Dick joined Gardiner Shoe Co., the family business, where he extended domestic production to international. He then moved on to other ventures in the shoe industry including executive positions at Diamond Shoe, Sperry Topsider and Dexter Shoe.

For over half a century, Dick was a dedicated member of the Two Ten Footwear Foundation where he served as Board Chair from 1993-1995. He also served as Assistant Treasurer and Chaired the Nominating, Endowment and Investment Committees. He mentored and served in a variety of roles to best carry on the founder’s mission of improving Footwear family’s lives.

Together with his wife Barbara, a.k.a. Dinny, Dick spent many years with family and friends enjoying his parents’ Maine summer home, Woodcove, and hosting many holidays and special occasions in their homes in Newton, MA and on Martha’s Vineyard. Together, Barbara and Dick knew how to gather family and friends across generations and provide a happy and fun place to be.

Retirement brought Dick and Dinny to Naples, FL where Dick continued his avid appreciation for the game of golf. Many social gatherings happened there as well, and this togetherness will surely be missed.

Loving father of Nancy Rubin Sussman, Susan Rubin Thorne and her husband Bill, John Rubin Sharp, the late Amy Rubin Cowan, and to family members Phil Cowan and Steven Sussman. Cherished grandfather of Noah Cowan, Sara Sussman Kirkwood, Rachael Sussman Kretman, Dean, Evan, Wesley and Monica Thorne, Ashley and Else Sharp. Loving great grandfather to Otto, Abe, Nora, Leo and very new addition, Hugo. Devoted brother of Judith Rubin Bush, her husband Phil, Alan Rubin and his late wife Liz Rubin. Brother-in-law to Sandy Stone and her late husbands John Woog and Hugh Stone, the late Fred Diengott and his surviving wife Ruth Diengott. Cousin to Dotty Goodman and her late husband Jimmy Goodman. Fond Uncle to his many nieces and nephews and their families.

A celebration of life for both Dick and his beloved Barbara will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Two Ten Footwear Foundation,

We send our most sincere and loving condolences to the entire family. Having spent many years as neighbors and friends of Dick and Barbara, we brought up our families on Stuart Road. We shared many wonderful meals and fun times with the Rubins.
We have missed them since they moved to Florida and continue to have very fond memories. We spent time together when they returned to Massachusetts in the Spring.
Dick was always a "gentle giant" and a gentleman. We are sad to learn of his passing and we send warm thoughts to all the family.

Dick was a loving and supportive uncle to me and my brother Seth. By some magic, when we were very small we charmed him into giving us one of his blue Air Force service caps. It was gigantic, like him, and we wore it with pride on many imaginary flights. Just one of many wonderful memories -- endlessly grateful to Uncle Dick, Aunt Barbara and the whole family.
